Flatwork You Live On, Poured to Stay Flat

Concrete patios, sidewalks and steps are the flatwork you actually live on — the pad under the grill, the walk to the front door, the steps off the back porch. We form, pour and hand-finish all of it around Billings, Laurel, Lockwood and across the Yellowstone Valley: patios sized for how you'll really use them, walkways with enough fall to shed water instead of icing over, and steps built solid with clean, even rises.

A lot of this work starts as replacement — a walk heaved into trip edges, a patio settled toward the house, steps crumbling at the noses. We do the tear-out and repour ourselves, and if the project grows into a driveway or a bigger pad, it's the same crew on one schedule.

Patios Built for a Montana Backyard

The outdoor season here is short enough that the patio should never be the reason you're not out in it. We pour patios and pads shaped for the way you'll use them — the table, the grill, room to move around both — with a surface finished for bare feet and a slope that sends rain and snowmelt away from the foundation instead of against it.

The unglamorous parts are what keep it flat: ground compacted before the forms go up, joints tooled where the pad wants to move, edges finished clean. A patio poured on lazy prep heaves at the first hard winter — which is exactly why the prep is where our time goes.

Sidewalks and Walkways

A heaved sidewalk isn't just ugly — every raised edge is a toe-catcher, and around here freeze-thaw manufactures them: water gets under a panel, freezes, and jacks it a little further out of level every winter. We replace individual sections where the rest of the walk is sound, cutting a clean edge so new meets old square, or tear out and repour the full run when it's gone past that.

New walkways get the same build as everything else we pour: compacted ground, straight forms, a broom finish for grip, and enough fall to shed water so they aren't sheet ice all winter. Front-entry walks, paths around the house or shop — honest flatwork poured to be walked on for a long time.

Concrete Steps That Feel Right Underfoot

Steps are the least forgiving flatwork there is — an inch of difference between rises and every trip up them feels wrong. We form steps carefully, pour them solid, and finish them by hand: even rises, full treads, clean noses, and a surface with grip. It's work you can see the difference in from the street.

Where old steps are pulling away from the porch, crumbling at the edges, or sitting out of level, we tear out and repour rather than skim-coat over problems — resurfacing failing steps buys a couple of seasons at best. Get us out for a free look and we'll tell you what they actually need.

How a Job With Ostermiller Runs

From the first look at the job to the final walk-through, here is exactly how it goes.

1

Look at the Job

We come see the actual job — the slab, the driveway, the lot, and the ground under it. What failed, why it failed, and what the fix really is. No blind quotes over the phone.

2

Straight Quote

You get a free written quote with a real number and a real timeline. It says what's included — tear-out, haul-off, prep, materials — and it holds unless the scope changes.

3

Do the Work

The crew shows up when we said and does the job the way we quoted it — tear-out, base, forms, pour, pave, seal or stripe. Anything unexpected, you hear about it immediately, not on the invoice.

4

Final Walk-Through

We walk the finished work together before we call it done. Clean lines, clean site, old material hauled off, and clear guidance on cure times and care. Done means you say it's done.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Billings?
Size, access, how much ground prep the spot needs, and whether an old pad has to come out first — those set the number. Estimates are free and happen at your place, looking at the actual site, and you get a written quote that holds unless the scope changes.
Can you replace just one or two sections of sidewalk?
Yes. If the rest of the walk is sound, replacing the heaved or cracked panels is the right-sized fix, and we cut a clean edge so the new sections tie in square. If most of the run is failing, we'll tell you straight that full replacement is the better spend.
Why do walks and patios heave around here?
Water and freezing, mostly. Moisture works under the slab, freezes, and expands — and Billings winters cross the freezing line over and over, so the lifting repeats all season. Good prep fights it: compacted ground, concrete sloped to shed water, and joints that let the slab move where it should.
How soon can we walk on a new patio or sidewalk?
Foot traffic after a day or two, and give it about a week before anything heavy rolls across it. Concrete keeps curing long after it looks done, and the first days matter most — we leave you clear guidance at handoff.
Do you build steps to match an existing porch or walk?
Yes — new steps get formed to fit what they connect to: the porch height, the walk, the grade of the yard. Rises come out even and the finish blends with the flatwork around it. Call (406) 717-4103 and we'll take a look at what you're working with.
