Asphalt crack sealing is the cheapest dollar you'll ever spend on pavement around Billings, Laurel, Lockwood and across the Yellowstone Valley, because in this climate a crack never stays just a crack. Water runs in, winter freezes it, and freezing water expands roughly nine percent — with force the mat can't argue with. Every thaw lets more water down; every cold snap pries the crack wider. We stop that cycle with hot-applied rubberized sealant put down before the damage compounds.
Maintenance is what decides whether a driveway or lot lasts. Sealed on time, pavement sheds water and keeps its base dry; skipped, the cracks branch into alligatored patches and potholes that need cut-out repair instead. Pair it with seal coating and the whole surface is covered — cracks sealed shut, surface sealed against sun and water.

Sealant only works on a clean, dry crack — put it over dirt and moisture and it peels back out by spring. So the job starts with prep: cracks cleaned out and blown dry so the sealant can actually bond to the asphalt walls. Then the rubberized sealant goes in hot, flows down into the crack, and sets up as a flexible, waterproof seal.
Flexible is the point. Pavement here moves — it expands in July and shrinks in January — and a rigid filler cracks loose at the first big swing. Hot-applied rubberized sealant stretches and rebounds with the mat, which is why it's the standard for this climate and why we use it instead of cold filler poured from a jug.
Asphalt around here rarely wears out from the top down; it fails from water getting in. Once a crack opens, every storm and every midwinter chinook melt sends water into the mat and down into the base. Then the temperature drops, the water freezes and expands, and the crack widens, branches, and starts lifting the surface around it.
Give that cycle a few Billings winters and a tight, sealable crack has become a spiderwebbed patch with a soft base under it — a real repair instead of a maintenance line item. Crack sealing exists to break the cycle early, while the fix is still cheap and quick.
The best windows are spring and fall, when moderate temperatures leave cracks at their middle width — not squeezed shut by summer heat or pulled wide open by deep cold — so the sealant goes in at the width it will live at. The one non-negotiable: get it done before winter, because winter is when open cracks do their damage.
We'll also tell you when sealing is no longer the answer. Alligatored areas and sunken, pothole-prone spots are base failures, and sealant on top of them is a bandage. Those sections need cut-out and patch work — which we also do — so you get one honest plan for the whole surface. Start with a free look.
