Red Lodge is the hardest place in our service area to be a concrete slab. The town sits high against the Beartooth front — where the Beartooth Highway starts its climb and Rock Creek runs cold along the east side — and its weather does more freeze-thaw cycling than anywhere down in the Billings valley. Concrete fails in the mountains for one root reason: water where it should not be, freezing when it wants to. Moisture soaks into a tired surface or pools under a slab, expands with every freeze, and jacks the concrete apart from inside — then plow blades and deicer strip the weakened surface. No sealer rescues a slab once that process is established. The honest fix is replacement, engineered against the cause.
Our mountain spec is the valley spec with the volume turned up: excavation and compacted base that drain instead of holding water, grades that move melt away from the slab, air-entrained concrete so internal moisture has room to freeze without breaking things, joints cut for the pour, and a real cure window. We do not jack or level settled slabs anywhere, and Red Lodge is the clearest case for why — lifting concrete over a wet, moving base just re-stages the failure.
