Concrete removal and replacement is the heart of what we do around Billings, Laurel, Lockwood and across the Yellowstone Valley. When a driveway is cracked through, a patio has heaved out of level, or the surface is spalling off a sidewalk in sheets, we break the old slab out, haul it off the property, rebuild the base underneath, and pour it new. Rip out and replace — done right once, instead of patched every other summer.
One thing we will tell you straight: we don't jack sunken slabs. Lifting broken concrete doesn't fix cracked, flaking concrete — when a slab is past saving, replacement is the honest repair, and that's the work we've built the operation around. A replacement done right is mostly work you never see again. We break out the old slab, load it, and haul it off — no rubble pile left by the fence. Then comes the part that decides how long the new concrete lasts: the subgrade. We regrade it, fix the soft spots that let the old slab settle in the first place, and compact it before a single form gets set.
From there it pours like any of our new flatwork: straight forms set to grade, exterior mix batched for Montana weather, a clean finish, and control joints placed where the slab wants to crack — so when it moves, it moves on our line instead of across the middle of your driveway. You get plain cure guidance at handoff: foot traffic in a day or two, vehicles off it for about a week.
Billings winters are hard on concrete in a specific way: the temperature crosses freezing over and over. A chinook rolls through in January, snowmelt runs into every crack and pore, then the cold snaps back and that water freezes and expands. Every cycle pries the cracks a little wider and pops a little more surface loose — that's the pitting and flaking you see on older drives and walks all over the valley.
Add plow blades catching heaved edges, deicer working on the surface, and water getting under the slab until the base goes soft, and eventually there's nothing left worth patching. Some outfits will lift a sunken slab, fill the cracks, and call it fixed. We don't offer mudjacking or slab leveling, and that's deliberate: raising a slab doesn't heal a crack, and it doesn't fix the flaked, weathered surface you'll still be looking at afterward. When the concrete itself is shot, moving it back up is a cosmetic patch on a structural problem.
What we do instead is give you a number for doing it right: out with the old, a rebuilt and compacted base, and a new slab finished for its job — driveway, patio, walk or steps.
